In the Amalfi Coast, the manufacture of ceramics and majolica has a long tradition, concentrated not only in the creation of decorative and everyday objects but also in architecture. In fact, in many of these coastal cities stand out some of the most beautiful majolica domes in Italy: let’s discover together the one in our beloved village, Praiano.
Coming from Positano, along the State Road 163, you will notice a church just below the road, it is the Church of San Gennaro Bishop and Martyr in Praiano. The majolica of the dome and the spire of the bell tower clearly visible from the road, will attract your attention. This is just one of the many beauties that Praiano will reserve for you.
The sacred building, constructed between 1589 and 1602 on the remains of a previous 13th-century church, is surmounted by an oval-shaped dome decorated externally with a covering of multi-coloured majolica, a triumph of colours reminiscent of the sea and sky of Praiano, with white and blue rhomboid designs, and supported by eight gold-coloured ribs. In 2009, a restoration project was also carried out that brought the dome back to its original beauty.
The view from the square, however, is simply spectacular. And here’s a curiosity: there is an event that can make this square even more suggestive, do you know what it is? We are talking about the Luminaria di San Domenico, a summer event to experience at least once in a lifetime in which fire and light are the undisputed protagonists.
Therefore, such a majestic and artistic dome, symbol of our country, could not fail to be made by our craftsmen, in ceramic, used as an air freshener and as a piece of art and furniture, thanks to its wonderful colors.
