The Donkey (O’ Ciucciariello)
Did you know that the ciucciariello is one of the most iconic and loved symbols of the Amalfi Coast? Do you know why?
The donkey had a privileged role: thanks to its extraordinary carrying capacity and physical resistance, it was the perfect animal to help coastal citizens move the economy in the area, considering that the Amalfi Coast is developed on two levels: one is the marine one, the other is the mountainous one, with dozens of villages that rise on the mountains and, today, are tourist destinations with breathtaking views.
Once upon a time, therefore, we could not live in our beloved Earth without the “pacifier”: to transport materials across steep climbs, to move between the different hamlets or simply to return home. An animal, which has accompanied generations and which today represented in Vietri ceramics has transformed into an iconic symbol of tradition and everyday life.
And this is why through our art of ceramics and our artisans, we continue to demonstrate the great recognition towards an animal that was once indispensable, especially on the coast, for the transport of lemons, but which today is still necessary for the transport of materials for building works. From the smallest piece as a simple lucky charm to the creation of larger pieces as a piece of art and furniture.
